Sailing around Croatia provides 'a breathtaking experience'
05 February 2008
Sailing enthusiasts who choose to cruise around Croatia can enjoy the open Adriatic and "a paradise of islands", according to one travel expert.
Writing in the Times, Jonathan Gornall described his exploration of the Dalmatian coast and Korcula dubbed 'Little Dubrovnik' - as "the holiday of a lifetime".
He remarked that regardless of weather conditions, the Dalmatian Adriatic presents "a spectacularly beautiful marine playground studded with 1,000 islands".
"Coming upon Hvar from the sea is a breathtaking experience," Mr Gornall continued.
"The beautiful Venetian harbour, nestled against tree-topped slopes and littered with shops and pavement cafes, bursts on the senses."
Following in the footsteps of previous visitors who have documented their experiences on "the new St Tropez", the sailing aficionado praised Hvar's "cosmopolitan cool", which meshes seamlessly with the island's 16th and 17th-century architecture.
After visiting Hvar, the Times correspondent headed for Split and found the vibrancy of Croatia's second city "concussive but infectious".
"Leaving the boat the next morning is a wrench," he concluded, admitting that "this isn't one of those holidays one is secretly glad is over".
In a recent compilation of the top 100 summer holidays for 2008, Hvar was deemed "the ritziest resort in the Adriatic".
