Significant golf expansion plans in Croatia

Croatia is looking to develop its golf course facilities and tap into the expanding golf holiday market, according to a recent report by HVS International London featured in 4hoteliers.

Although there are currently only two existing golf courses in Croatia, in Zagreb and on the island of Brijuni, near Pula, the tourism board says there are 23 new courses under development.

Istria has the most golf course developments currently in the planning and construction stages. Up to 14 new courses are being constructed here.

Interestingly, Croatia is planning to concentrate new golf courses in areas such as Istria so that visitors can base themselves in their villa in Istria and play a number of golf courses during their stay.

The first golf courses to open will be Motovun in mid-2008, Savudrija in autumn 2008, and Markocija, Novigrad and Medulin in 2009.

The brand new 18 hole courses will range from 70 to 120 hectares and the 27 hole courses will range from 100 to 160 hectares, depending on the natural features of the location, according to Istria's zoning plan.

Golf holidays are traditionally most popular in the shoulder months of March to June and October to November but Croatia's pleasant climate should allow courses to operate year round.
