Spear fishing new year on Losinj
14 December 2007
Every new year's eve, the town of Mali Losinj, on the Croatian island of Losinj (pronounced Loh-sheen) holds a famous spear fishing competition, known as the New Year's Cup.
Once ruled by the seafaring Venetian empire, the proud tradition of the spear fishermen of Mali Losinj is celebrated by the local community and visitors can enjoy the atmosphere.
New year's celebrations in Mali Losinj are traditional and fun, with parties organised in most Croatian accommodation.
A farewell to the old year is held in the main square around midday and in the evening the locals exuberantly welcome in the new year.
Losinj is in the northern Adriatic, off the coast of Istria in the Bay of Kvarner. It is though to have been inhabited since the iron age and features a number of ancient forts.
People have been holidaying here for over a millennia as there are ruined Roman villas as well as many Croatian villas built by the Austrian aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
