Split is top Croatia holiday choice

The popular Croatia holiday city of Split has hit the top spot in a new list of the most favourable destinations in Europe.

Balkan Insight reports on the poll from the European Cities Marketing Association, which revealed that Croatia's second largest city experienced the continent's highest growth in visitors between 2001 and 2006.

"Positioned almost exactly in the middle of the Croatian Adriatic coastline, Split saw an annual growth of around 17 per cent more tourists," explained the publication, adding that Split saw off competition from 92 other countries in Europe.

It went on to describe tourist activity in 2006, when around 200,000 holidaymakers headed to the city, where approximately 250,000 people already live.

This marked a 400 per cent increase on visitor numbers from 1999, while the average stay for Croatia travel enthusiasts was 2.2 days.

Adriatic analysts suggest that improved accommodation in Croatia will sustain the holiday trend - particularly with a notable growth in the popularity of villas and apartments as old hotels have undergone renovation.

Official figures suggest that US tourists have been Croatia's most regular visitors, followed by French and Spanish travellers.
