Swimming in 'less touristy' Dalmatia
08 February 2008
The Dalmatian islands are an increasingly popular destination for swimming and sailing enthusiasts, it has emerged.
Nautical-but-nice Times travel writer Cath Urquhart headed to the Croatian destination to partake in a specialist swimming holiday.
She explained that she chose Hotel Maestral in Prvic Luka, a village on "sun-bleached, car-free" Prvic island - reached from Sibenik in under an hour by ferry.
Following a two-kilometre swim from Separina Prvic's other village - to the island of Tijat, Ms Urquhart declared her favourite venture to be a four-kilometre river swim in the popular Krka National Park.
Holiday organiser Simon Murie explained to the water babe that he chose Croatia for its value for money.
"The Dalmatian islands are a lot less touristy than comparative islands in Greece," said Mr Murie.
He continued: "Tourism on the Dalmatian coast is growing, but most people go south of Split towards Dubrovnik, not north towards Sibenik and the islands - they are really popular with the sailing crowd too."
Next month sees the opening of Marina Preko - situated on the Dalmatian island of Ugljanu - which has been deemed another "must" for sailing enthusiasts.
