Travel Dubrovnik: Cruise to tranquillity this summer
10 March 2008
A Dubrovnik holiday may become a less hectic one than normal this summer, as authorities in the so-called Adriatic pearl clamp down on cruise customers.
Reports in the Croatian press have alluded to high-season congestion in the medieval town, caused by an overload of cruise companies parking up their vessels and offloading tourists.
Following the lead of officials in other major Mediterranean resorts such as Monte Carlo and Nice, the new Dubrovnik Cruising Club will monitor traffic in order to make sure the destination remains a pleasant one for holidaymakers staying in villas or apartments there.
"The Dubrovnik Cruising Club
will not only coordinate the cruisers' movements, but will also have the authority to withdraw concession for operation of any vessel or company that violates the established limitations," explained Balkan Travellers.
Previous visitors to Croatia have lauded its qualities as an alternative to more overcrowded destinations in the Mediterranean, with the range of quality accommodation on offer making it even more attractive to independent groups who favour 'unique' holiday experiences.
