Travel guide 'recommends study in contrasts Hvar'
27 June 2008
Croatia, particularly the island of Hvar, is a "study in contrasts", it is claimed.
Writing in a travel guide on Canada.com, Ann Racich says old ladies modestly dressed in black on Hvar are juxtaposed with girls with bare midriffs, while traditional fishing vessels are often moored alongside luxury yachts.
"It's a heady mix," she says, and extends as far as architecture, with rap music blaring from many ancient buildings.
According to Miss Racich, the island receives more sunshine than anywhere else in Croatia, "but still remains green".
Hvar is said to allow the visitor stunning views of the Adriatic and is adorned with olive groves, pine trees and vineyards.
The island also features a 16th century fortress which contains a museum with ancient amphoras, a cathedral from the same era and a renaissance theatre.
For younger visitors, there is also a thriving nightclub scene, according to jetsetreport.com.
According to the website, the Carpe Diem is the centrepiece, entertaining party-goers by the harbour throughout the night.
