'Tuscan appeal' renews Istria popularity

The west Croatia region of Istria is continuing to be popular among those from overseas, possibly due to its likeness to Tuscany in Italy, a property expert has suggested.

Rhiannon Davies, director of overseas property website Amberlamb, says there are "striking geographical and physical likenesses" between the two areas.

As such, she said there are also similarities in the types of property foreign investors look for.

Ms Davies explained Istria tends to be a region where buyers want older, traditional property that they can renovate or which has been restored already.

However, she added: "Elsewhere in Croatia there are plenty of new apartments and villa developments proving popular with those who simply want a place in the sun."

Meanwhile, the Croatian tourism board has revealed the country had almost 11 million visitors between January and November last year.

This was a rise of eight per cent on the same period in 2006 and included over 1.5 million travellers from Germany.
