U-turn on Croatian meat and dairy ban
05 June 2008
Tourists will now be able to take their own food to Croatia after all, it has been revealed.
A U-turn has been performed and visitors traveling from European Union (EU) countries will now be able to enter the country with their own meat and dairy products, balkaninsight.com reports.
It represents a "softening" of the ban brought in on Sunday after Czech and Slovak tourists threatened to boycott the country.
Croatia's agricultural ministry said it will adopt EU standards of exempting residents from within the 27-member group but visitors from outside the zone will continue to have to abide by the new rules.
The rules were originally put in place for all tourists after a request from the European Commission.
Gordan Jerbic, head of the veterinary section at the Croatian agriculture ministry, told Reuters on Tuesday that the country had to follow the guidance given to them if they are to be successful in gaining accession to the EU.
