US students offer business insight to Croatia's youth

A group of university students from the US have graced the small screen in Croatia as a result of their enterprising efforts.

The News-Gazette reports that the University of Illinois academics organised a winter trip to the country in an attempt to learn about Croatia's economic development.

Visiting three cities during the course of their trip, the group spent five days at JJ Strossmayer University in the eastern city of Osijek.

After loaning thousands of dollars to Croatian students for use towards business start-ups, the US team were featured on three of the country's TV channels, as well as radio stations and newspapers.

University of Illinois staff member Jeffrey Kurtz explained to the newspaper that the trip was intended to spread his students' business know-how to Croatia.

"So many entrepreneurial opportunities are there, and what's interesting is their culture doesn't really promote entrepreneurship – children in Croatia are encouraged to get a job with the government".

He added that the group had taken to the country "like ducks to water" after being introduced to Croatian history and language before they left the US.

Following the success of the trip, a group of Croatian university students will visit the Illinois campus this spring.
