Weak dollar leads Americans to Croatia

A growing number of Americans are turning to less developed countries such as Croatia in a bid to make their weakening dollars stretch that little bit further, it has emerged.

Despite the poor health of their currency and the uncertain economic conditions, a recent survey found that three quarters of Americans still plan to spend as much money on travel in 2008 as they did this year.

If travel statistics continue to reflect those of 2007, around 93 per cent of Americans can be expected to take some form of leisure trip.

The difference in 2008, however, will be that most will be finding ways to get more for their money and it seems that many are turning their backs on more costly European destinations and looking to Croatia for a more affordable holiday.

According to Edward Piegza, who operates around 170 tours a year, bookings for the coming year are looking so good that he is debuting a new tour of Croatia's Istrian Peninsula.

"Savvy travelers are looking for ways to hedge European travel costs, and one way to do that is to look to tours that are fixed price and in dollars," he told Sedona.biz.

Property investment information website Croatiasun.com recently reported that Croatia is probably the leading tourist destination in the Mediterranean at present, with Dubrovnik experiencing a year-on-year increase in tourist numbers of around 40 per cent.ADNFCR-1197-ID-18406439-ADNFCR
