Zadar offers ideal opportunity for a 'lazy weekend'

A visit to Croatia's fifth largest city provides the perfect opportunity for a "lazy weekend", according to one intrepid travel specialist.

Writing in the Times, Hannah Betts also noted that Zadar is ideally placed for anyone interested in a visit to one of the Adriatic coast's many lighthouses.

She made a trip to Veli Rat, a lighthouse located on Dalmatia's Dugi Otok ("Long Island"), which is said to have a population of 1,800.

"Veli Rat is the highest and most beautiful of 11 largely 19th-century lighthouses scattered along the coast that have been playing host to tourists since 2000," Hannah explained.

"They range in isolation from Sveti Petar, 20 minutes' stroll from the tourist haunt of Makarska, to Struga or Susac and Palagruza on the open sea."

Before setting off for Veli Rat and its "hypnotic" views, she recommended that visitors stock up on food in Zadar, while the destination offers a calming effect "superior to any spa".

Zadar, dubbed the Golden City, is 3,000 years old and regarded by many in the know as one of Croatia's most underrated holiday locations.

Noted for being one of the sunniest spots in the Mediterranean, the city is near a number of the country's national parks.ADNFCR-1197-ID-18452013-ADNFCR
