Zagreb 'street kings' set the tone for song contest

A group of Zagreb street musicians named Kraljevi Ulice - 'Kings of the Street' - are gearing up to represent their country in this year's Eurovision song contest.

With the support of Zagreb mayor Milan Bandic, the troop scooped the top spot in last month's Dora, an annual pop festival held to ascertain the Eurovision entrant.

ECS Today reports that although their song, entitled Romanca, tied with another song from Croatian soap actress Antonija Sola, Kraljevi Ulice ultimately won as they received more points from the jury.

The crowd-pleasing group, who perform every day on Zagreb's main square by the city's largest market, told the independent Eurovision website that they now intend to go to Belgrade in May "to bring Eurovision to Zagreb".

Ardent fan Mr Bandic added: "Zagreb has already shown that it is the best city in the world - Zagreb can do anything! God willing, we can bring Eurovision to the heart of our city next year."

This year's Dora event was graced with a performance from three-time Eurovision winner Johnny Logan, known by many as 'Mr Eurovision'.

After entertaining the audience with some of his most popular tunes, the Irish singer joked with them and concluded by thanking them in Croatian.
