American crashes out in Zagreb's skiing World Cup
05 January 2009The American Lindsey Vonn came within inches of clinching first place in the prestigious skiing World Cup before crashing out at the last hurdle, the Associated Press has reported.
Ms Vonn was one of the favourites for the Zagreb-based event and proved the bookies right as she flew into an early lead at Sunday's (January 4th) slalom race.
Despite this impressive start, it was not to be for the pace-setter as she spun out five gates before the finish line, conceding first-place to Germany's Maria Riesch.
Ms Riesch told the Associated Press: "I didn't ski that great today and Lindsey was the strongest. I was lucky she went out.
"The expectations are really high now and a lot of people expect me to win every race."
Aside from its winter sports pedigree, Zagreb is home to a number of must-see cultural sites, including its Museum of Contemporary Art, the Croatian National Theatre and the Zagrebfest pop festival.
