Astro-park due to open in Croatia

A new astro-park is about to open in Croatia which could attract anyone on a South Dalmatia holiday.

The Makarska-based observatory is the brainchild of astronomical group DAUP Orion and its opening on July 25th will be marked with a special ceremony.

DAUP Orion will mark its tenth anniversary at the same time as the astro-park opens its doors.

The organisation first thought of the observatory three years ago, according to the Croatian Times.

Orion used the site of a ruined monument to construct an observatory with a dome and a telescope.

In March, the newspaper also reported how Orion organised Makarska's Earth Hour, when lights were switched off to highlight the importance of being environmentally aware.

During the hour of darkness in the city, it showed astronomical observations of the night skies on the city waterfront.

Fellow Croatian city Split also took part in the Earth Hour event, during which the lights in the Eiffel Tower, an Egyptian pyramid and the Coliseum in Rome were also turned out.
