Austria backs Croatia for EU entry

Austria has backed Croatia for entry into the European Union (EU), which could act as a major tourism draw for the country.

On a recent trip to the capital of Zagreb, Austrian foreign minister Michael Spindelegger confirmed that his country would be supporting the Balkan nation's admittance to the international organisation, the Croatian Times reported.

According to the publication, Mr Spindelleger commented that Croatia was "more ready than any other country to join the EU".

Croatia is a particularly popular holiday destination for Austrians, with recent official statistics from the former Yugoslav nation showing more than 813,000 visits were made to the country last year.

According to the figures from the Croatian government, holidays in the country are also favourites among Germans and Italians.

Recently, the Croatian prime minister Ivo Sanader said that he expected his country to be granted membership in the EU by early 2011.
