Beer Festival considered to attract tourists to Zagreb

Milan Bandic, the mayor of Zagreb, has announced the city is considering hosting a beer festival.

He claimed a touristic event is an "ideal" way to promote Croatian food and drinks, reports Javno, a news provider in the country.

It is proposed such a festival should take place in the city each autumn, at the beginning of September.

Mr Bandic said it would be based on the Munich "Oktoberfest", and insisted it will become smooth to operate once the first has been organised.

He continued: "Why should we not do in Zagreb what Germans do in Bavaria and Slovenians do in Ljubljana? Zagreb needs to lead the way."

The mayor was speaking at Lake Bundek ahead of the FloraArt competition which begins tomorrow.

Visitors are expected from throughout Croatia for the annual international flower and garden exhibition and are expected to contribute towards the "patchwork of colour" set to go on display in Zagreb.
