Book Croatian villas for Rijecka carnival
19 November 2010Booking Croatian villas in January 2011 to attend the International Carnival of Rijecka could prove to be highly enjoyable for all, as a number of traditional customs are put on display for locals and tourists alike.
For example, much time is spent making the ugly masks to honour legends claiming - in ancient times - these figures chased evil forces away with their joy and happiness, thus bringing in the spring and celebrating the birth of a new dawn.
Those who do make their way to the town for the event - which was first put on in 1982 by the Rijeka Tourist Board - will no doubt see the bellringer, which is identical to that who many years ago defended the region from the Ottoman invasion.
The parade is, according to the organisers, "the jewel in the crown of the carnival festivities on the Kvarner and even further afield", suggesting it should not be missed.
