Book Hvar accommodation for traditional Easter celebrations
06 December 2010People in search of traditional Easter celebrations in 2011 may be wise to book accommodation on the Croatian villa of Hvar ahead of a special event.
Following the Cross is described by whatsonwhen.com as the "focal point" of the religious festival on the Adriatic landmass.
On the evening before Good Friday, a series of processions are held in pursuit of the holy cross, as it travels around the island.
This activity has been carried out on Hvar since the 16th century and covers a route that totals some 22 km.
Those who walk throughout its six parishes to follow the cross will arrive back at base in time for a prayer service on the morning of Good Friday.
Such an event could appeal not only to religious holidaymakers but also those who would like an authentic taste of Croatia.
Other festivals planned for the coming months in the country include the Zagrebdox film meeting and the Dubrovnik Carnival.
