British swimmer triumphs in Croatia
12 December 2008A British athlete has won a swimming race at the European Short Course Championships in Rijeka in Croatia.
James Goddard won the men's 200 metre individual medley in one minute 53.46 seconds, which is 1.5 seconds faster than his personal best.
In second place was Vytautas Janusaitis of Lithuania and Alan Cabello of Spain came in third, in a race which saw Great Britain gain its first gold medal at the event.
Goddard, who was sixth at the Beijing Olympics, said he plans to get closer to American duo Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.
"You see what Phelps can do and Lochte and all those guys, it's just a wake-up call. You can't mess about. If you want to be close to them you've got to have four amazing strokes," he added.
The championships, which are happening for the 12th time, are to taking place this week from December 11th to 14th, with a total of 40 countries taking part.
