Cilic outclasses Martin in Chennai Open
06 January 2009The Croatian tennis star Marin Cilic proved his pedigree by seeing off Alberto Martin in this week's Chennai Open first round.
In a frenetic encounter yesterday (January 5th), the 20-year-old eventually managed to overcome the plucky Spaniard in two straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-4.
While Martin proved a tough opponent for third seed Cilic, the Bosnian-born player was able secure a place in the second round.
According to the Press Association: "The Croatian dug deep to save four break points in the opening set while his opponent was unable to do the same on the only one he faced as Cilic took the upper hand."
The second set was also said to be a tense affair, with Cillic eventually managing to defeat Martin after 90 minutes of exhilarating court action.
In other Croatian sports news, the national football team coach Slaven Billic recently announced that he would be resigning from his position after the Fiery Ones World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign.
