Conductor may improve popular festival for holidaymakers in Croatia

Tourists planning to travel to Croatia next summer may be pleased to learn one of the country's great conductors has been handed responsibility for a popular event.

Niksa Bareza will assume control of the Split Summer Festival, after being named as its new chief, reports the Croatian Times.

He will hold the position for two years, during which time he may aim to significantly improve the already popular celebration.

Bareza is one of the most renowned artists in modern Croatia, with appearances at many of Europe's top opera houses helping him to forge a fine reputation, the newspaper explains.

Fans of classical music may be among those rushing to attend the festival next year, in the hope the conductor brings with him a hint of his day job.

The Split Summer Festival includes a range of drama, dance and music performances and events, typically taking place in July and August.
