Conference aims to protect Croatian environment
08 October 2009Environmental and financial experts are holding a conference in Dubrovnik this week with the aim of finding a renewable energy source in Croatia's Dinaric region, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) reports.
A positive result that safeguards the area's future could be good news for people planning a holiday in Croatia, as the forests, lakes and mountains around the Dinaric Arc are popular with tourists.
The WWF will tell attendees of the conference to implement the latest hydropower technology, which could see a portion of Croatia's energy created at no damage to the environment.
Paolo Lombardi, director of the WWF's Mediterranean Programme, said: "Hydropower emits no CO2 and this makes it a highly attractive alternative energy source in the region."
Neighbouring countries, such as Albania and Montenegro, already rely on hydropower for up to 90 per cent of energy - and the WWF wants Croatia to make a similarly informed decision.
Countryside lovers visiting Croatia were last month advised to visit the Plitvice National Park for beautiful waterfalls, placid lakes and some of the most stunning scenery in Europe.
