Croatia Travel: Split recommended by writer
23 July 2008Split is a charming Croatian city offering a range of attractions to visitors, it is claimed.
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Louise Roddon says it is a "pleasant workaday town", characterised by its marble walkways, grand residences and pre-Christian sphinxes.
At Split's centre is the walled city palace built by Emperor Diocletian, situated among other highlights in the Unesco heritage city such as St Dominious Cathedral, built on the site of Diocletian's mausoleum, according to Ms Roddon.
She says other attractions include a 13th century campanile, the palace's central piazza and the Bronze Gate, where people are recommended to start their travels through the city.
There are also said to be plenty of places to eat and bars and clubs catering to people throughout the night.
A poll by the European Cities Marketing Association earlier this year revealed Split hit top spot in a list of favourite destinations in Europe, balkaninsight.com reported.
