Croatia celebrates Independence Day
08 October 2009Croatia is today (October 8th) celebrating Independence Day, marking the 18th anniversary of its split from Yugoslavia, reports the Croatian Times.
President Stjepan Mesic, prime minister Jadranka Kosor and parliament president Luka Bebic spoke to express their delight and pride in the country's achievements since it gained independence in 1991.
October 8th is an official public holiday in Croatia, so tourists may deem it a great time to visit the Adriatic coast.
Since independence was achieved Croatia has grown economically, as membership of the United Nations and Union for the Mediterranean may illustrate.
The country's unspoilt natural coastlines and wooded mountains have become more accessible to visitors and some may now consider it to be one of Europe's premier holiday destinations.
It has been reported this month that new flight routes from Manchester and Edinburgh to Split and Dubrovnik will begin next year, which could make it easier still to visit the Baltic beauty.
