Croatia could be great value for money in coming months
30 October 2009Short-haul flights, such as those from Britain to Croatia, could represent the best value for money once new aviation rules come into effect.
A forthcoming rise in air passenger duty will hit those using long-haul flights hardest, according to aviation consultants Ascend.
So those people previously looking at exotic forays to far-flung destinations such as Australia, Japan and Dubai may now want to consider Croatia as a piece of paradise slightly closer to home.
When asked what the impact of the duty rise on long-haul travellers would be, Ascend's chief economist Peter Morris said: "Significant. You only have to look at the increment of price and multiply it by three or four to see just how much it will mean [to a family]."
The price hike in long-haul flights comes in the midst of the credit crunch - which could further limit travellers' ability to leave Europe.
With its beautiful Adriatic coast and mountainous retreats by the ski slopes, Croatia could be the ideal choice for a family holiday.
Air passenger duty was under consideration to be scrapped in a pre-Budget report in 2007.
