Croatia holidaymakers set for shopping boost

Retail therapy could soon be added to the list of things to enjoy on a Croatia holiday, after permission was given for a giant shopping centre in Zagreb.

Austrian development company m2 Immobilien has been told it can go ahead with the project, entitled Supernova Zagreb, reports the Croatian Times.

Finance is believed to already be in place and a contractor has been chosen, meaning work can begin immediately.

Initial hopes are that the retail centre will be open for business by the end of 2011, the newspaper reveals.

At 110,000 sq m, the centre will be one of the largest in Croatia and may appeal to tourists planning to travel to the country in the coming years.

It may provide a welcome alternative to the historic and quaint streets of the capital, where visitors are already offered a range of shopping options.

Supernova Zagreb is just one of several such projects currently underway or recently completed in Croatia, with the Lumini Shopping Centre in Varazdin opening earlier this year.
