Croatia holidays 'becoming increasingly popular'

Croatia's popularity as a tourist destination among Britons has been illustrated by figures revealed by a travel expert.

Meri Matesic, director at the Croatian National Tourist Office in London, says despite the global downturn in tourism during the recession, visits from the UK to the Adriatic country soared by three per cent in the last year.

"We are really happy because of that fact and we hope that this trend will continue this year," she said.

The increase in British travellers to Croatia was mirrored by a rise in popularity among Germans, Russians and Austrians too.

Destinations that Britons and other holidaymakers are likely to continue heading to throughout 2010 include Dubrovnik, which was described by a tourism chief earlier this year as "the jewel" of the country.

For those seeking nature and picturesque landscapes, a trip to the Opatija Riviera or the Istrian region in the north could be the best choice.
