Croatia offers chance to save birds of prey
18 December 2008People who would like to save endangered birds of prey and preserve a vulnerable forest have the opportunity to do so on a break in Croatia.
There is dense woodland sheltering golden eagles, wolves and bears, however the griffon vultures are a species which is struggling to survive.
People can visit the rescue centre set up by conservationist Dr Goran Susic 15 years ago - in this time the pairs of vultures have increased from 25 to 100.
Volunteers can feed baby vultures, check nests to make sure no babies have fallen into the sea and tend to the older, more demanding birds.
When people are not helping out they can explore the surrounding ruins and monasteries, walk on nature trails looking at the sea views and watch dolphins.
The country is also fast emerging as a popular place to visit for naturalists who want to see exquisite creatures around the turquoise lakes and waterfalls of Plitvice, the Guardian says.
