Croatia returns 'to international prominence'
19 August 2008The Croatian men's basketball team are "one of the surprises" of the Olympics, it has been claimed.
Doug Smith, writing for the Toronto Star, states the squad are about to "get the country back to international prominence" following a 91-5 win over Iran which ensures the competitors will travel home to Croatia having at least reached the quarter-final stage.
The newspaper states the squad, who finished second in the 1992 Barcelona Games, can progress further, after a series of disappointing performances at recent Olympics.
A meeting with Spain on Wednesday now stands between the squad and a place in the semi-final phase of the competition.
The comments come after a strong showing from the Croatian football team in the summer's Euro 2008 tournament.
Slaven Bilic led the side to three victories out of three in the group stage, including a win over Germany, before losing to eventual semi-finalists Turkey on penalties.
