Croatia shipwreck may interest travellers
27 April 2010Croatia is in the news this week after it was revealed a shipwreck dating back to the second century has been protected by authorities.
The Greek trading vessel, which sits off the coast of Cavtat, is home to more than £5 million worth of ancient artefacts, reports the Telegraph.
People on a Croatia holiday in the future could see some of the valuables - which include ancient pots and vases - raised to the surface.
Although little remains of the ship, its contents are of high quality and in demand, so Croatian authorities have built a metal cage around the site to protect it in the short term, the newspaper explains.
Underwater photographer Neil Hope of Cornwall is one of the few to have been given permission to visit the historic boat.
He tells the publication: ''I'm an experienced diver and I've dived wrecks all over the world, but this was the most unique experience."
News of the submerged ship adds another dimension to Croatia's reputation as one of Europe's most historic spots, with the country's highlights already including the walls of Dubrovnik and Zagreb city centre.
