Croatia 'very serious' about EU membership

Changes to property buying legislation in Croatia illustrate the country's determination to join the European Union (EU).

That's according to one expert, who claims that the recent decision to make it easier for foreign nationals to purchase housing in the country show that it is "serious" about EU membership.

Despite this, UK manager for Investment Group Croatia, a real estate firm, Andrea Marston, believes it may take time for the change in law to make an impact.

She said that while it was too early to gauge the effect the new legislation had made, it "made sense" that it would soon begin to filter through.

"It shows that Croatia is very serious about joining the EUO and about making improvements to its property market, so it is a big boost to confidence from that perspective," Ms Marston added.

Data published by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics in January disclosed that the largest increase in tourism numbers in 2008 had come from Japan.
