Croatian athletes recognised at ceremony
22 December 2008Athletes including high jumper Blanka Vlasic, gymnast Filip Ude and the women's table tennis and men's handball national teams have been recognised at a ceremony.
The sportspeople were winners of the Croatian Olympic Committee awards, which were presented at the event in Zagreb's National Theatre last week, javno.com says.
Croatian athletes won five Olympic gold medals in Beijing this year and have also achieved 250 medals at other international competitions.
Blanka told the source: "I was not hopeful for the award. I will do my best for the world to hear the Croatian anthem several times more and see my victory dance."
The committee also presented the special Matija Ljubek award, which is given for lifetime achievements to individuals and associations who stand out, the source says.
Recently, the European Short-Course Championships, which took place in Rijeka in Croatia, saw 16 new world records achieved for swimming over four days.
