Croatian athletes triumph in 2008
31 December 2008Croatian athletes who traditionally lack the conditions to train in have achieved several good results in their fields of sport during 2008, it has been reported.
Skiers Janica and Ivica Kostelic, high jumper Blanka Vlasic and swimmer Duje Draganja are just a few of the sportspeople who have done well, according to javno.com.
Filip Ude, a gymnast from Medjimurje, won the silver medal for his country at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and was named best Croatian athlete of the year.
The sportsman had to leave the country to train and spent half of the year away from his family preparing for competitions, the source says.
Athletes including high jumper Blanka Vlasic, gymnast Filip Ude and the women's table tennis and men's handball national teams were recently recognised at a ceremony.
The sportspeople were winners of the Croatian Olympic Committee awards, which were presented at the event in Zagreb's National Theatre, javno.com said.
