Croatian cuisine could become major factor in attracting tourists

The quality of food and drink could be a major factor in attracting travellers to Croatia, if the International Culinary Tourism Association is to be believed.

Erik Wolf, president of the organisation, says culinary tourism is a burgeoning industry that is becoming significantly more important.

"Not everyone shops, attends the theatre or [plays] golf, but everyone eats," he notes.

A number of destinations around the world are emerging as new hotspots for fine cuisine - one of which may be Croatia, which is enjoying particularly strong results in the wine sector.

Mr Wolf adds food and drink is becoming a "deal breaker" for many families looking to go away.

If this is the case, Croatia's reputation not only for wine but also for its strong seafood traditions could see it become one of the most highly sought-after destinations among foodies.

A 2008 Grasevina Goldberg from the country recently picked up a prestigious award at the Vinalies Internationales ceremony in Paris.
