Croatian govt to reward handball team
06 February 2009Croatia's handball heroes are to be rewarded for their storming performances in the recent world championship, it has been reported.
After overcoming stiff opposition including South Korea, Cuba and Poland, the tournament hosts eventually came unstuck against France at the final in Zagreb.
According to the online entertainment portal Javno, despite falling at the last hurdle the silver medallists are to be awarded a prize of 60,000 kuna (£7,000) each.
As reported by the website, the Croatian prime minister Ivo Sanader, commented: "This is [a] great success - being second in the world - in anything, including sports.
"The silver medal shines also."
The tournament took place between January 16th and February 1st at various venues across Croatia.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that close to 20,000 movie-lovers were expected to descend on Zagreb later this month for the city's International Documentary Film Festival.
