Croatian holiday in Slavonia region 'is a countryside lover's dream'

Lovers of the great outdoors may find all they desire in a holiday during a trip to the Croatian region of Slavonia.

Located in the far east of the Balkan country, Slavonia is a large and fertile region offering wide plains, dense forests and winding rivers, according to the Croatian National Tourist Board.

The "picturesque wine country" is one of Croatia's most historical areas, with Baroque churches and palaces in regular supply and ornate horse-drawn carriages still a common sight.

Discussing the prospect of a Croatian holiday in Slavonia, the board states: "Those who wish to discover it will have many pleasant surprises - particularly sophisticated connoisseurs of hidden cultural experiences."

Although geographically it is close to some of Croatia's most famous and publicised locations, Slavonia has managed to preserve its unique heritage and tradition.

Slavonia covers the area between the River Sava and River Drava, as well as bordering part of the River Danube.
