Croatian island 'offers cultural summer break option'
20 August 2010The island of Hvar, located just off Croatia's Dalmatian coastline, is a spot just right for culture vultures seeking a summer holiday with a difference.
While the island has the sun, sea and sand required to make any trip in the warmest months enjoyable, it also has a rich heritage, particularly in art.
The Croatian National Tourist Board states the resort has a "special charm" that is well received by the artists who visit.
During the summer, Hvar hosts a plethora of events, from musical concerts to theatre troupes and folkore ensembles showing off their skills.
"[These] events will enrich the days spent under the bright sky of this sunny island for many visitors," the organisation claims.
Hvar is easily reached from the mainland, with a ferry service operating between the island and the ancient city of Split, where tourists could try the local speciality of oysters.
