Croatian national park wins prestigious European status

Northern Velebit National Park in north-west Croatia has won European Destination of Excellence status, the Croatian Times reports.

Tourists may want to visit the park, which could now be protected to preserve its natural beauty.

The national park was one of 22 locations on the continent that received the special award from European Union (EU) commissioner Pawel Samecki.

With European Destination of Excellence status the park will now be promoted by the EU and given a sustainable tourism model.

The values, features and diversity of the national park, as well as Croatia itself, will be highlighted by one of the continent's most powerful organisations.

Marijana Biondic of Senj Tourist Board and Irena Glavicic of the national park both stated that such recognition is a great success for Croatian tourism.

Plitvicka Jezera National Park was recently lauded by Croatia's tourism minister Damir Bajs as one of the reasons behind the country's positive tourism results.
