Croatian president visits Syria
22 December 2008The president of Croatia arrived in Syria last week for an official visit after being invited to Damascus by the country's own president Bashar al-Assad.
Stepan Mesic will hold talks with Syrian officials about bilateral relations, economic ties and the financial situation in the Middle East and the rest of the world.
The two countries have signed a convention for the prevention of double taxation as trade exchanges are active between them, leading to the agreement.
Syria exports foodstuffs, vegetables, cotton materials to Croatia and imports chemical materials, oil and gas equipment and sea products from the country.
The Croatian prime minister recently said Great Britain wants to see Croatia complete its talks about entry into the EU and end accession negotiations as soon as possible.
Ivo Sanader was speaking after a meeting with the British secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs David Miliband in New York earlier this month.
