Croatian winemakers 'drink to' credit crunch

Some of Croatia's most renowned winemakers have been given a timely boost by the economic downturn, it has been reported.

According to Event Magazine, the Adriatic hotspot's emerging talents and established vintners alike are gearing up to make a splash at a major London exhibition for the first time.

Previously, expense had prohibited Croat winemakers from attending the London International Wine Fair - which is held in May - but the favourable exchange rate has now made this issue a thing of the past.

Director of the show, James Murray, told Event Magazine: "For the first time ever we've had booking confirmation from exhibitors based in the Czech Republic and Croatia.

"We expect the weaker pound will make travelling to London more attractive, in relative terms, to non-UK exhibitors and visitors."

One of the biggest artistic events of 2009 is currently taking place in the coastal town of Rijeka, where locals and visitors alike are eagerly participating in the resort's yearly carnival.
