EU entry moves closer for Croatia
09 October 2009Tourists planning a trip to Croatia may be pleased to know the country's entry to the European Union (EU) moved a step closer yesterday (October 8th).
A report leaked by the organisation revealed it could conclude a deal to make the Baltic country its 28th member as soon as next year.
The annual progress report criticises a number of would-be entrants - such as Turkey - for corruption and organised crime, but makes it clear Croatia ticks many of the boxes required for EU membership.
The report states: "If Croatia meets all outstanding benchmarks in time the accession negotiations, including any transitional arrangements, could be concluded next year."
It was reported earlier this month that Croatia's application to join the EU could progress after Slovenia dropped its objection, which had previously stalled the bid.
Benefits of union membership include money being pumped into infrastructure - including the building of new roads and railways.
Croatia's stunning landscape would also be protected under EU environmental policy.
