Engage with locals 'for ultimate Croatian holiday experience'

Those heading to Croatia for a holiday this summer may wish to follow the advice of an expert who suggests talking to locals is the best way to enjoy an authentic experience in a country.

Simon Calder, travel editor of the Independent, says the "first rule" of travelling is to ask for advice, as people are likely to be willing to help.

Mr Calder was responding to recent research by Orlando Tourism that suggested only 21 per cent of British holidaymakers will attempt to speak to natives while abroad.

"I would always urge people to get out and about and explore as much as they can of the destination," he states.

One advantage of engaging with people while staying in accommodation in Croatia could be access to local knowledge, such as the best restaurants, shops and sights.

StarExponent.com has previously noted the friendliness of people in the coastal region of Dalmatia.
