Famous Croatian painter dies
24 December 2008A well-known painter from Croatia who was famous worldwide for his Naive art floral motives died last week in hospital at the age of 87.
Ivan Rabuzin was a carpenter who began exhibiting his work in 1956 after taking an evening arts class in his late 20s and began painting full time in 1963.
The Kljuc-born artist often described his work as a vision or an idealistic reconstruction of the world and flowers were a signature element in his paintings.
Over five decades Rabuzin showed his work at more than 200 exhibitions across Europe, including Croatia, Paris, Milan and Zurich and he also showed in Japan.
A 72-year-old Croatian artist recently opened a gallery in Manhattan, although she has never sold a painting or held a public viewing of her work before.
The self-funded gallery features only work by Ana Tzarev and is 14,000 sq ft with two storeys, and was designed by James Hard Architects.
