Folk dancing event may have entertained tourists in Croatia

Tourists in Croatia over the weekend may have enjoyed a folk dancing festival in Split, which was celebrating its 90th anniversary.

The Jedinstvo ensemble kicked off its annual celebration at the Spaladium Arena on Friday (December 4th) and was expected to attract more than 400 people, reports the Croatian Times.

Since its conception in 1919, Jedinstvo has gone on to become on of Croatia's best-loved dance events and is one of the country's oldest traditions.

It has won a Dalmatia County Award for its work and the pride it has created in the city of Split.

Of the 400 ensemble members, some make up the dance group, others are in the mixed folklore choir and there is also a mandolin orchestra, the publication states.

Recognised as one of the world's finest folk shows, Jedinstvo has won awards across the globe - such as the silver medal it secured at the 2009 International Festival of Folklore event held in Dijon, France.

Travellers to Croatia recently may also have been lucky enough to spot the cast of cult television show Doctor Who, who were in Split last week filming scenes for the next series.
