Hike from sea to summit on holiday in Croatia
07 July 2010While many people are aware of the sunbathing, swimming and sightseeing opportunities available in Croatia, there is plenty more to the country.
The Deutsche Presse Agence says one increasingly popular activity is hiking, with the nation's mountains a hotspot for this.
Advantages of choosing Croatia for a hiking holiday include its steep seaside landscape, meaning routes can start from the picturesque beaches of the Dalmatian coast and quickly reach the summit of local mountains.
"The Adriatic country
offers a different kind of hiking experience than that of the Alps. Starting at sea level, the karst stone mountains rise sharply to over 1,700 metres altitude," the news source explains.
It adds one of the first mountains to conquer should be the peak that overlooks Orebic on the Peljesac peninsula.
The highest point within the boundary of Croatia and its islands is located at Dinara and is 1,830 metres above sea level.
