Last decade 'has seen Croatia holiday become even more desirable'
04 August 2010The creation of an independent Croatia in the 1990s has seen the nation rebranded and turned into an increasingly attractive destination for a summer holiday.
Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, says since the reclassification the country has benefited from a steady increase in visitor numbers.
"Since becoming independent more people are going every year and cultural awareness is growing," he explains.
The expert adds some people forget it has been a "mainstream holiday destination" for even longer than it is perhaps sometimes assumed.
One spot to which culture vultures may be wise to head when visiting Croatia is Split, home to a large and prestigious theatre community.
Meanwhile, those who prefer history could be best served in Dubrovnik, where some of the city's ancient walls date back more than 1,300 years.
