Longer holidays in Croatia becoming more popular, results show

Croatia is becoming a destination travellers are choosing to spend longer periods in, according to new tourism results.

Statistics revealed at the Croatian National Tourist Board Show and reported by the Croatian Times suggest lengthy breaks are being taken on the Adriatic coast.

While the number of tourists heading to the area - which includes spots such as Dubrovnik - fell slightly in the first three months of 2010, the number of overnight stays rose by one per cent.

In total, 778,000 nights were spent on Croatia's famous coastline in the quarter, the newspaper explained.

As well as this boost, Adriatic destinations also received 11 per cent more travellers in March compared with the same month in 2009.

Visitors from overseas are largely responsible for Croatia's surge in popularity, with more than half the numbers coming from abroad.

The rise in demand for nights in Croatia may be behind the decision of some airlines - such as easyJet and Jet2.com - to increase the number of routes they offer to the country.
