New bypass could make travel in Croatia easier
23 December 2009The new Rijeka bypass has opened, which could make the city more accessible to people who have travelled to Croatia.
At almost nine kilometres long it provides motorists with a faster diversion around the southern side of the historic port city in the north of Croatia, reports the Croatian Times.
Almost one-third of the work carried out to build the road was on complex structures, such as bridges, tunnels and viaducts - which could make it a particularly interesting road to travel on.
It has taken 23 months and 137 million (£122 million) worth of investment to complete the project, the newspaper states.
Visitors to Croatia could see the introduction of the bypass as the perfect chance to motor around the country, with Rijeka handily located for visits to Zagreb and the hundreds of Adriatic islands off of the Dalmatian coast.
The new road is just the latest addition to Rijeka's transport infrastructure, after a £13 million renovation to its historic port was completed earlier this year.
