New stadium to offer range of events to Croatia travellers
31 March 2010Sports fans eyeing a future trip to Croatia may wish to time their arrival on the Adriatic coast with the opening of a new stadium.
Mayor of Zagreb Milan Bandic announced yesterday (March 30th) that construction work on an arena in the capital is to start by the end of the year, the Croatian Times reports.
The city's main football club - Dinamo Zagreb - already uses the Maksimir Stadium, but the mayor suggested there will be no more investment in this for up to a decade.
As such, focus will switch to the new 18,000-seat venue in the Kajzerica area.
Maksimir opened in 1912 and has had a series of upgrades - the most recent of which cost 250 million kunas (£30.6 million), the newspaper explains.
The new stadium may offer travellers to Croatia the chance to enjoy not only top-class sport, but concerts and exhibitions too.
Dinamo Zagreb competed in this season's Europa League, welcoming teams such as Anderlecht and Ajax to Croatia.
